Alice Torres

Alice M. Torres, age 87, of Oneida passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Anna John Nursing Home. She was born February 13, 1927 to the late Mitchell and Ida (John) Denny.

On October 23, 1942 she was united in marriage to Manuel Torres Sr. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1990. Alice was proud that she was born, raised, and lived her entire life on the Oneida Reservation.

During her life she had a very strong faith, and was active in both Holy Apostles Episcopal Church and Oneida Assembly of God.

She was fluent in the Oneida language and was one of the original Oneida Hymn Singers.

Alice took on many different roles with the Oneida Tribe throughout the years, including: Oneida Head Start, Foster Grandparents, and Senior Companion programs.

She was very proud of her flower and vegetable gardens, and of course her family. Alice doted over her grandchildren, cooking and caring for them any time she had the opportunity to. She enjoyed sewing and was an excellent seamstress, having made most of the clothing for her children. Baking, canning, and cooking were some of her favorite things to do. It was important for Alice to teach her family to have strong morals and respect for others.

Survivors include 12 children: Mother Superior Alicia Torres, Tucson, AZ; Susan Torres, Oneida; Manuel "Jesse" (Camille Taylor) Torres, Milwaukee; Linda (Richard Ackley) Torres, Green Bay; Mike Torres, Green Bay; Nancy Torres, Oneida; Bill (Sandy) Torres, Seymour; Joanne (Greg Jacobs) Torres, Green Bay; Carol (Rick Laes) Torres, Green Bay; Joseph Torres, Oneida; Karen Torres, Green Bay; and Rick Torres, Green Bay. She is further survived by 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother-in-law, Larry (Kay) Flores, Seattle, WA.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Torres; sister, Lucy Denny; and six brothers.

Friends may call at Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour, on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 from 4 pm to 8 pm with the Oneida Hymn Singers at 6 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Oneida Assembly of God Church from 9 am until the funeral service at 10:30 am with Pastor Lonnie Johnson officiating.
