Charles D. Havill, age 86, died Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Appleton Retirement Community. He was born March 27, 1923, son of Charles Havill and Florence Duncan Havill of Minneapolis. On March 13, 1943 he married DeLoris Bosse. They enjoyed 53 years together prior to her passing in 1996.
An honors graduate of North High School in Minneapolis, Chuck was an accomplished gymnast. He won the all-around championship in Northwest Gym Meet competition that included five Midwestern states. His specialty was the horizontal bar. He met his future wife, Del, at the airport while taking flying lessons. They were married prior to his leaving for the South Pacific where he served his country in WWII.
Chuck, a member of the army air corps, was a mechanic and crew chief on a P-38 fighter plane in New Guinea. He participated in the "Island Hopping" campaign in the Pacific and received an honorable discharge following the surrender of Japan.
Following his 2 ½ year stint with the army, Chuck eventually became a skilled cabinet maker. He moved his family to Park Falls, WI where the G. Hines Lumber Co. hired him to manage their Millwork operation. An opportunity to work in sales for Hines brought Chuck and his family to Green bay where he retired in 2008 and lived at the Appleton Retirement Community for the last year and a half. He enjoyed interacting with the residents and playing his harmonica for special occasions.
Chuck is survived by two daughters, Holly (Bill) Collar of Seymour; Alison (Pete) Biolo of Rhinelander, one son, Jeffery, a Benedictine monk in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and a daughter-in-law Kristin; his grandchildren include: Susan (Brian) Brashaw; Angela (Scott) VerVoort; Sarah (Glen) VerVoort, Tony (Traci) Biolo, Chris (Sarah) Biolo, Jeremy (Sarah) Biolo, Ashley and Maria Biolo, Jessen (Beth) Havill, Nate Havill, and Erin (John) LaRose.
