DeWayne Leo Heckenlaible, 79, Nichols, passed away at home on Thursday, May 4, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on August 12, 1943, to the late Elmer and Doris (Lemke) Heckenlaible. DeWayne was united in marriage to Irene Geer on June 16, 1962, in Navarino. The couple built their home in Nichols where they spent 35 years until relocating to Arizona for 12 years. Irene preceded DeWayne in death on June 21, 2017, in Benson, Arizona. DeWayne moved back to Wisconsin in 2019.
He is survived by his son, Terry (Sheri) Heckenlaible, Taylors, SC; daughter, Tammy (Bobbie) Calkins, Nichols; grandchildren: Melissa (Travis) Mercer, Casey Heckenlaible, Amber Krueger, Dustin Gist, and Brittney Heckenlaible; great-grandchildren: Brayden Mercer, Olivia Mercer, Jamir Smith, Javarion (Vari) Doran, Ariyah Krueger, and Amara Soto. DeWayne is further survived by his brothers: Robert (Carol) Heckenlaible, and Byron (Peggy) Heckenlaible; his sister, Sue (Gordon) Grosnick; and sister-in-law, Rena Heckenlaible.
In addition to his wife and parents, DeWayne was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Heckenlaible.
A private celebration of life will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton at a later date. Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour, is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family extends a special thanks to the ThedaCare Hospice team for their compassionate care and the friends and family who kept a watchful eye on DeWayne.
