James Sherman, 91, Appleton, formerly of Seymour, passed away with his family at his side on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
James was born May 20, 1920 to James H. and Lucetta (Jenkins) Sherman in Seymour.
On November 13, 1948 he was united in marriage to Joyce Blohm, daughter of George and Kathleen (Brownson) Blohm, at the Seymour Methodist Church.
James lived in Seymour during his youth, graduated from Seymour High School in 1939.
He left for service in the US Army Air Corps in January 1942 and was stationed in England until September 1945.
After arriving home he and his brother, Dan, formed the Sherman Construction Company, building many hip roof barns in the area. He left the company in 1954 and went to work for De Coster Construction Company. He joined the Local Carpenter's Union 1146 and was a 54 year member. He retired from Gamsky Construction Company in 1985.
James was a life-long member of the Seymour United Methodist Church being baptized, confirmed, and married there. He served as presidents of the men's club, taught Sunday school, and played on their dart ball team.
James was the Scoutmaster of Troop 17 and also the Webelo's den. He was a member of the "Order of the Arrow."
James enjoyed playing softball on the Seymour Community League. He played baseball with the Legion team in the mid forty's.
James was a 65 year member of the American Legion Post 106 in Seymour serving as a Commander. He was also a member of VFW Post 7692, in Freedom.
James enjoyed horseback riding with his family and was a member of the Broken Wheel Riding Club attending many horse shows and trail rides. James and Joyce enjoyed snowmobile riding and were members of the Dairyland Snowmobile Club.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and friends at the "40" up North. Hobby's include carving ducks and fishing lures. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, and other board games with family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include: Wife, Joyce, of 62 years; one daughter, Penny (Jim) Much, Cicero; five sons: Bruce (Beverly) of Appleton; Scott (Cindy) of Cicero; Gregory (Connie) of Appleton; Kenton (Darlene) of Cicero; Kevin (Amanda) of Blanchard, OK; nine granddaughters: Jody (Michael) Wormley, of Albuquerque NM; Billie Jo Sherman of Appleton; Brooke Sherman of Appleton; Corey (Robert) Weatherup of Minneapolis, MN; Jenny (fiance Valdir) Sherman of Medway, MA; Jamie Sherman of Eau Claire; Stacy Sherman of Oshkosh; Brittany and McKenna Sherman of Cicero; five grandsons: Kyle (MacKenzie) of Neenah; Ryan (Sara) of Lafayette, IN; Caleb Sherman of Appleton; Thomas Sherman of Appleton; Nicholas Sherman of Cicero; five great-grandchildren: Alexandra and Andrew Wormley of Albuquerque, NM; Aliyah Sherman of Appleton; Scarlett Weatherup of Minneapolis, MN; Hayden Sherman of Neenah; two step-grandsons and their families: Scott(Trina) Chandler and their children Derick, Mabrey, John, Ryan, and Rachael; Shawn(Christy) Chandler, all of Stratford, OK; one sister Colleen Cashman of Pasadena, TX; three sisters-in-law: Argerie Sherman of Houston, TX; Caroline (Al) Storma of Shawano; Betty Blohm of Appleton.
Proceeding in death were his parents, his in-laws, brother Dan (Ann) Sherman, sister Kathleen (Carlton) Krabbe, brothers-in-law: Chappel Cashman, Art Randell, Bill Blohm.
Friends may call at United Methodist Church, 721 Pleasant Way, Seymour, on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 10 AM until the memorial service at 1 PM with Pastor Rebecca Henry officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Seymour American Legion Post #106.
