Leah M. Grassel, age 67, passed away Friday morning, March 8, 2013 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Seymour. She was born May 3, 1945 in Michigan daughter of the late Raymond and Jeanette (Gauthier) LaFave. On August 3, 1968 she was united in marriage to Emil Grassel in Michigan. He preceded her in death on October 28, 2007.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
Following high school Leah attended St. Mary's School of Radiology in Duluth. While working in Marshfield she met Emil and the couple moved to Seymour in 1968.
Leah waitressed for many years at the Coachlight and Krabbe's Supper Club prior to suffering a disabling brain aneurism. She was known for her humor and her famous tagline, "Careful, your plate is hot like your waitress".
One of Leah's favorite things was being with Vonnie Barclay and their bowling team on the team's trips to the state bowling tournament. Leah and Emil also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas. Prior to her aneurism she fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Paris and other parts of Europe with her cousin Rosemary and took a cruise with her cousin Shirley.
Leah was an active resident at Good Shepherd and was frequently playing cards and helping the staff fold napkins and setup for dinner.
Survivors include her children: Chris (Katie) Grassel, Seymour and Michelle (Rich) Sawyer, Green Bay; five grandchildren: Gordon, James, Forrest, Abigail, and Elaina; sister Theresa (Bill) Nelson, Ford River, MI; two brothers: George (Judy) LaFave, Ford River, MI and Arthur LaFave, Janesville; two nephews: Rudy and Jon Paul (Amanda) LaFave; niece LeighAnn LaFave; aunt Louise Legault; uncle Maurice Gauthier; and many cousins.
Friends may call at St. John Catholic Church, Seymour, on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 12 noon with Father Bob Kabat officiating. Entombment will take place at Gardens of Rest Mausoleum in Escanaba, MI on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 11 am (12 noon eastern time).
