Leslie William Schmidt passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the age of 89 following a short illness. He was born January 20, 1925 to the late Lester and Emma (Rotter) Schmidt.
He met his sweetheart and future wife Marjorie Peterson in high school. They married June 9, 1946 and shared 64 A½ years, before her death in December 2010. Together they farmed, raised crops, dairy cattle and four children. Les had a great love of fishing, and in the spring, spent time on "Bamboo Bend" for the walleye run was a must after milking was done. Sheephead and polkas were the cheapest form of entertainment there was.
Les continued to enjoy caring for Marge's flowers and sharing them with the congregation.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Black Creek, where he served many years on the church council, was men's dartball caption, and raised his voice in praise of the Lord in the church choir.
Les served on the Shiocton School board and Valley Funeral Home. He also served multiple terms on the Board of Directors at Center Valley Co-op, many years as president. He was instrumental in getting the corn drier and storage buildings built and worked very hard to make sure that monies were paid out to the share owners.
He helped Margie start up Countryside 4-H club and served alongside her as she volunteered at Outagamie Health Center and later Good Shepherd Nursing Home.
Leslie is survived by his children: Wayne (Doris); Carol Schmidt, both of Shiocton; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; semi adopted children, Keith (Ellie) Kruse; sister, Georgine Sasman, Seymour; brother, Dewey, Black Creek.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Kathleen; a son, Daniel; grandson, James; sisters: Myra Wehrman and Fern Zuleger.
