Melvin G "Smokey" Lathrop, 89, Black Creek, passed away early Saturday morning, July 14, 2007. He was born July 3, 1918, in New London, son of the late Jess and Alma (Lehman) Lathrop. On September 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Bernice Falck. Smokey graduated from Oshkosh Business College in 1935 and from then until 1986 worked for Murphy Construction where he was General Manager. He was a past Village Clerk in Black Creek and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Black Creek. He and his wife both loved to share their garden with friends and neighbors. They took many trips all over the world, but mainly Florida, every January to visit their friends. Smokey lived for his Tuesday Sheepshead games at the log cabin in New London.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice; sons, Le Roy (Toni) Lathrop, Appleton; Richard (Beverly) Lathrop, Green Bay; Alan (Debra) Lathrop, Black Creek; grandchildren: Todd (Sara) Lathrop, Tina (Andrew) Potokar, Kenneth (Athene) Lathrop, Michael (Sandra) Lathrop, Kristin (Phil) Turnbull, Scott (Amanda) Lathrop, and Eric (Brandy) Lathrop; five great-grandchildren; three brothers: Harold Lathrop, Black Creek; Herbert (Alice) Lathrop and Robert (Betty) Lathrop, all of New London.
Preceded in death by one sister, Francis; a brother, Kenneth; and sister-in-law, Helen.
Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Black Creek on Monday, July 16, 2007, from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m., with Pastor Steve Schlicht officiating Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.
