Melvin Shafel

September 22, 1942 — April 19, 2014

Melvin Thomas Shafel was born September 22, 1942 in Antigo, WI to the late Joseph and Margaret (Marx) Shafel. He entered into eternal peace after a long battle with cancer on April 19, 2014 at St. Joseph's Residence in New London.

Mel graduated from Antigo HS and attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in Agriculture Education and Industrial Arts. He taught metal shop at Neilsville, was a Surge dealer for 15 years, sold crop insurance, was a real estate broker, and a crop adjuster.

He was married September 22, 2001 to Judy Grandman Conradt.

Mel was an avid member of the Green Bay Sunrise Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, member of St. Denis parish in Shiocton, and Shiocton senior citizens.

He is survived by his wife Judy (Grandman, Conradt) Shafel, his brother and spouse James and Bonnie Shafel, Antigo; his brother Joseph Shafel, Cascade; his sister and spouse Mary and Walter Gelhar, Wausau; brother David Shafel, Rhinelander; son-in-law and spouse Lee and Kari (Naber) Conradt, Germantown; and grandchildren Tyler and Danielle, three nieces and four nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by Joseph and Margaret Shafel, parents, Allen Shafel nephew, Kayla Shafel, neice.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday morning, April 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Denis Parish in Shiocton, N5591 2nd Street, with Fr. Joseph Nsereko and Deacon Ken Bilgrien officiating. Relatives and friends may call at St. Denis Parish on Wednesday evening, April 23, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a Knights of Columbus prayer service before mass. Interment will be at Bovina Cemetery. Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour, is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family thanks the doctors and nursing staff from Appleton Medical Center, Theda Care home care, Theda Care Hospice, and St. Joseph Residence. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to be used toward a scholarship fund.
