Robert Joseph Schmit, age 44, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at home with his family by his side, after a four-year battle with metastatic malignant melanoma. Rob was born on April 1, 1977, to Thomas and Betty (Batte) Schmit. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. Rob was a 1995 graduate of Seymour High School.
Rob enjoyed his time with family and friends, especially one-on-one time filled with great conversation. He loved to hear everyone's perspective and took pride in understanding why people said and felt the way they did. He absolutely loved nature and all it had to offer. He loved his time up at the cabin with his loved ones. A roaring campfire was the perfect pastime. Most of all, he loved to watch the wildlife out the window. He respected wildlife and spent every moment he could observing and understanding all of God's creations. He named every deer, raccoon, and chipmunk he watched. He knew by their movement what they would do next. Rob had many friends of all ages and from all aspects of life, whether that was from growing up, online gaming, or those from up north.
He had a personal and unique relationship with everyone he met. Rob loved his firearms and hunting. He loved shooting, cleaning, holding, and talking about firearms. The color, engraving, and feel of a firearm were all important to him including the grip, action, and trigger pull. He would sight them in and was not happy unless it was perfect. He would never want to injure an animal or let it suffer. Rob wanted to be precise and taught us the patience needed to be a hunter that respected every animal. He enjoyed being a mentor to the young. He played basketball, pitched the kickball, and threw the football with not only his nephews but many of his friends' children.
He is survived by his parents: Thomas and Betty Schmit; siblings: Nathan (Sara) Schmit, and Jennifer (Rick) Liebergen; nephews: Samuel, Nicholas, and Christopher Liebergen; aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends including his good friends upnorth.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Bud and Marion Schmit and Clyde and Millie Batte; aunt Nancy, and cousin Rick.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour, from 9:00 a.m. until the celebration of life at 11:00 a.m., Pastor Ty Stoneburner officiating.

Rob, you were our trusted confidant; always there to listen without judgment. Throughout life you taught us all patience. Your respect of nature and its surroundings were an inspiration to all of us. Even at the end you showed us strength and courage beyond measure. You always thought of us and we know you fought the fight for us as much as for yourself. We love and respect you for that. Your will to live was unfathomable. You made it to the goal and are free of your physical confinements. We know you are running through the woods chasing that squirrel and climbing your tree stand in a place way better than anything we can imagine. You will be with us every day and we will love you forever. Love from all of us.
